On my other car,(s30/L28et) on the forums it is more desirable to have few longer gears. On here the thought is to have more shorter gears.Although I do understand how fewer longer gears benefit a turbo car, I still dont understand why someone with a turbo car would want more shorter gears. The longer the gear, the longer you are in boost. Having more shorter gears you spend more time losing boost between gears and having to build boost back up. I have always thought with NA's you want more shorter gears and turbo's you want longer fewer gears. I would be curious to hear as to why some of you guys want lots of short gears? Especially being turbo? I mean yes having a short gear I get it that it multiplies the torque, but if you don't have the tire to support it or have a turbo that isn't "instaspool" I feel like it wouldn't be usable. The tire concept is even true for NA's. If you have a short tire, and a short gear there is a loss of usable power as you spend most of your time having traction problems. On my other car, there are some guys that have spent $1500+ to convert there cars to have longer gears. A couple guys made a hybrid R230 differential using a Nissan Armada ring and pinion gear and a 300zxtt R230 to get the 2.95:1 ratio in the differential.
